A strong burning sensation is sometimes interpreted as proof that mouthwash is “working”. Sensory intensity, however, is not a reliable measure of effectiveness.
What can cause the burning sensation?
Flavouring ingredients, the presence of alcohol, individual sensitivity of the oral tissues or irritation already present in the mouth may all play a role.
Do you have to tolerate it?
There is no benefit in forcing yourself to use a product that causes considerable discomfort. Use the rinse as directed and do not exceed the recommended contact time.
When should you stop using it?
If you experience intense burning, swelling, changes to the oral tissues or symptoms that persist after rinsing, stop using the product and consult a professional.
