Blood on dental floss can have several causes. It can result from an incorrect, overly aggressive technique, but it can also accompany gum inflammation. Simply stopping cleaning does not address the cause.
Using floss too forcefully
Snapping floss into the gum can cause injury. Guide it through the contact point in a controlled way, then move it along the side of the tooth.
When should you pay attention to the gums?
If bleeding recurs, or swelling, tenderness, bad breath or changes persist despite gentle regular hygiene, arrange a check-up with a dentist or hygienist.
Should you stop flossing?
Do not decide solely on the basis of one episode. A professional can assess the gums and select an appropriate tool and technique.
