One Dark Tooth: Why You Should Not Whiten It Yourself

Jul 28, 2026Elixio

When all teeth have a similar shade, the cause may be natural colour or surface staining. One tooth becoming clearly darker is different and may require pulp testing, an assessment for previous trauma, an X-ray or treatment.

Possible causes

  • Previous trauma, even many years ago.
  • Loss of pulp vitality.
  • Discolouration after root-canal treatment.
  • A large filling or restorative material.
  • Decay or a crack.
  • A difference in enamel structure.

Why will toothpaste not solve it?

Whitening toothpaste mainly acts on surface deposits. If colour comes from inside the tooth, harder brushing will not remove the cause and may irritate the gums.

Why avoid applying homemade chemicals to one tooth?

Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and acids cannot diagnose the cause. Spot treatment may create uneven results, irritate tissues and delay appropriate care.

What should you do?

  1. Book a dental examination.
  2. Recall any previous injury.
  3. Note pain or reactions to temperature and biting.
  4. Do not increase toothbrush pressure.
  5. Continue gentle routine hygiene until the appointment.

FAQ

Does a dark tooth always hurt?
No. Lack of pain does not rule out a problem.

Can a dentist whiten it?
The appropriate method depends on the cause and the condition of the tooth.

General stain-removal products such as activated charcoal toothpaste are not a substitute for diagnosis of one dark tooth.
