Activated charcoal is used in some toothpastes aimed at cleaning tooth surfaces and removing everyday deposits, for example after coffee or tea. Removing surface stains must not be confused with changing a tooth’s natural colour.
What can charcoal toothpaste do?
Depending on the complete formulation, it may support mechanical cleaning of the enamel. The effect does not depend on colour or charcoal alone, but on the full product formula and how it is used.
What should you not expect?
Toothpaste does not lighten discolouration within the tooth structure in the same way. To understand the difference between surface care and changing tooth colour, read our guide to choosing charcoal toothpaste. Guide to choosing charcoal toothpaste.
If you have sensitivity or enamel problems, discuss the choice of product with a dentist.
