Flossing with a fixed retainer: how to clean after braces

Aug 07, 2026Elixio

After orthodontic treatment, a fixed retainer may remain bonded to the inner surfaces of the teeth. It changes how floss can be guided and may prevent the usual top-down insertion in some areas.

How can you get under the retainer wire?

Special floss threaders, super floss or another tool recommended by an orthodontist or hygienist may help. Do not pull the wire or prise up the bonded points.

Do not skip spaces around the retainer

Difficult access does not mean the area can be left uncleaned. Deposits and debris can collect around a retainer, so ask for a technique demonstration during a check-up.

When should you see the orthodontist?

If the wire has detached, moves, irritates the tongue or causes pain, do not try to repair it yourself.
