Oil Pulling with Implants, Crowns and Bridges

Jul 25, 2026Elixio

Implants, crowns and bridges need careful cleaning around margins and beneath bridgework. Oil pulling may be an optional extra but cannot mechanically remove biofilm from the sites most prone to inflammation.

What is essential around implants?

  • Brushing with a suitable brush.
  • Cleaning between teeth.
  • Bridge floss or brushes suited to the restoration.
  • Regular reviews and professional cleaning.
  • Monitoring bleeding, swelling and movement.

Does oil affect dental materials?

Restorations use different materials and implants include connecting components and surrounding tissues. After a recent procedure or with an unusual appliance, ask the treating clinician first. Do not add essential oils or other substances yourself.

After implant placement

Do not begin oil pulling during healing without the surgeon’s approval. Vigorous rinsing and suction may be inappropriate. Follow the postoperative instructions exactly.

Warning signs

  • Bleeding around an implant.
  • Swelling, pain or discharge.
  • Persistent unpleasant taste.
  • Movement of a crown or restoration.
  • Gum recession exposing implant components.

Oil pulling does not treat inflammation around implants and must not delay a visit.

How can it be added after approval?

  1. Use it gently before brushing.
  2. Avoid forceful swishing.
  3. Afterwards, clean restorations with tools recommended by your hygienist.
  4. Do not skip crown margins or areas beneath bridges.
