Oil pulling may temporarily improve the feeling of freshness, but it cannot remove every cause of bad breath. Common causes include tongue coating, plaque, gum disease and dry mouth.
Why might breath feel fresher?
Moving liquid around the mouth and removing loose debris may create a clean feeling. If coating remains on the back of the tongue or between teeth, the effect may be brief.
A complete fresh-breath routine
- Use oil pulling only as an optional step before brushing.
- Brush for around two minutes.
- Clean between the teeth.
- Clean the tongue gently.
- Drink water regularly.
- Do not mask a persistent problem with flavour alone.
Could the gums be the cause?
Bleeding, swelling, unpleasant taste and loose teeth may indicate inflammation. Oil pulling cannot remove tartar or treat periodontal disease.
What about the stomach?
Most causes arise in the mouth, although exceptions exist. If dental causes are excluded and symptoms persist, medical assessment may be appropriate.
When is oil pulling not enough?
- Bad breath remains despite full hygiene.
- There is pain, bleeding or discharge.
- Severe dry mouth is present.
- The problem began suddenly and persists.
- There are swallowing difficulties or oral changes.
