How Long Should You Do Oil Pulling?

Jul 22, 2026Elixio

Oil pulling instructions sometimes recommend swishing for 15 or even 20 minutes. That may be uncomfortable for a beginner. Start with a shorter session and increase the time only if you can do so without jaw pain, nausea or an urge to swallow.

How many minutes should a beginner start with?

Two to five minutes is enough for your first attempts. It gives you time to get used to the texture and practise gentle movements. You do not need to reach the duration described in traditional practices immediately.

Do you have to swish for 20 minutes?

No. A longer session is not a goal in itself. If your jaw feels tired or tense, or you feel nauseous after 5 to 10 minutes, stop. Comfort and safety matter more than the number on a timer.

How to increase the time gradually

  1. Start with two or three minutes for the first few sessions.
  2. Add approximately one minute every few days.
  3. Do not extend the session if your jaw becomes tense.
  4. Use less product if your mouth feels too full.
  5. Stop early if you feel that you might swallow.

How can you avoid tiring your jaw?

Move the oil slowly and gently. You do not need to force it through every interdental space. Let it move around your mouth naturally and pause your jaw movements briefly when needed.

How much oil should you use?

Too much makes swishing difficult because the product mixes with saliva and increases in volume. Beginners should use a small amount and follow the directions on the packaging.

What should you do afterwards?

  1. Spit the oil into a bin or tissue.
  2. Do not swallow it.
  3. Rinse with water if you wish.
  4. Brush with your normal toothpaste.
  5. Clean between your teeth.

Why not spit coconut oil into the sink?

Coconut oil can solidify at lower temperatures and build up in pipes. Repeatedly pouring it down a drain can contribute to blockages.

Does a longer session produce better results?

Do not assume that longer is automatically better. Oil pulling is an optional addition to oral hygiene, not a treatment. Extra time cannot replace effective brushing, interdental cleaning or professional care.

When should you shorten or stop?

  • Jaw-muscle pain or tension.
  • Nausea or gagging.
  • Difficulty avoiding swallowing.
  • Recent oral surgery without professional approval.
  • Increasing tooth or gum pain.

Is oil pulling suitable for children?

It requires controlled swishing and reliable spitting. It is not suitable for young children or anyone with swallowing difficulties. Ask a dentist before considering it for an older child.

FAQ

Is five minutes worthwhile?

Yes, particularly at the beginning. A short and comfortable routine is preferable to a long session that causes tension or discourages regular use.

Why does the amount seem to increase?

The oil mixes with saliva, so its volume may grow. This is another reason to start with a small amount.

Should you brush afterwards?

Yes. Oil pulling does not replace brushing or cleaning between your teeth.
